Toyota hydrogen cartridges

The Japanese manufacturer Toyota wants to implement a system of swappable hydrogen cells in vehicles and homes, so that we don't have to stop at a gas station or charging station when we run out of fuel.

Toyota presented a portable hydrogen cartridge at the Japan Mobility Bizweek event in late October, which it says will power its next-generation hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles. The new portable hydrogen cartridge was already presented by the Japanese brand's engineers in 2022 and is a new version of the hydrogen cell. The current version, according to statements collected by Techradar, was developed thanks to work on reducing the size and weight of the hydrogen tanks used in its fuel cell electric vehicles. They say that this new model has been made lighter and easier to transport.

The interchangeable hydrogen cartridges, as Toyota explains, can power a wide range of vehicles and everyday objects, from small motorcycles to cars and even household appliances. The Japanese manufacturer believes that this technology can also serve as a source of energy for the home or even provide fire for cooking.

A car with removable batteries

Toyota's idea is that future electric cars operate with interchangeable batteries, just like toy cars. This portable, interchangeable battery has been widespread in Asia for years, especially for bicycles and electric motorbikes.

The system has also recently arrived in Spain thanks to the company Silence, which offers a subscription-based battery swapping service at its charging stations.

Toyota guarantees that with these cartridges, drivers can take the battery with them and quickly swap it for an old one when it runs out of fuel. This, they say, prevents them from having to refuel at a gas station, as is usually the case with a car powered by fossil fuels or with a charging station in the case of those with lithium batteries. The cartridge, Toyota says, does not emit CO_ as a byproduct, only water vapor, and can contribute to net-zero production targets if it is produced using renewable energy sources such as wind and solar, rather than fossil fuels.

Energy beyond cars

The Japanese company's ambitions with this technology are not limited to transport vehicles. Toyota's intention is to make these hydrogen fuel cartridges an alternative energy source that can be removed from the car to power any device in an emergency.

These interchangeable cartridges, it is claimed, could create a cheaper and more convenient way to transport hydrogen, without the need to lay down a large and expensive network of pipes. Hydrogen, Toyota assures, can also be used to generate electricity at home, both to power existing electrical appliances in the home and as a substitute for gas used for cooking. For its distribution, the Japanese manufacturer envisions a home delivery system for charged hydrogen cartridges that can be sent along with food and other items. Along with the delivery of the new battery, the exhausted battery will also be collected to recharge it and start the process again. Silence's first battery exchange system.

The electric motorcycle manufacturer Silence offers battery rental and exchange for 15 euros per month.

Silence has presented a battery exchange system that will operate through a subscription service for users at charging stations. It is a pioneering business model in the two-wheeler sector - the first to be launched in Europe - that allows the customer to reduce the purchase price of the vehicle and adapt it to the use it makes.

Until now, the automotive and motorcycle industries have marketed their products in their entirety. From this moment on, a new path opens up: on the one hand, the acquisition of the motorcycle, which will be the property of the buyer, while the battery will be owned by Silence.

"We want to compete with the most successful combustion motorcycles and now, for the first time, we can do it at a lower price," explains Carlos Sotelo, CEO of Silence.

Silence S01 - The best-selling electric motorcycle in Spain in 2021 - with the Battery as a Service (BaaS) program and the €1,100 discount on the Moves III Plan will cost only €2,750 (€1,000 more than a comparable one).

Users who purchase an electric motorcycle without a battery will subscribe to the system for €15 per month and will be able to make two charges, each additional charging cycle at battery exchange stations will have a surcharge of €5 and a cost. Approximately €5.8 if charged at home.

The battery exchange system consists of changing the batteries of the motorcycles at the stations, when the electric motorcycles are full and users can reserve in advance a 'Bate Through the 'ry Station' application.
