They have designed a wristband to prevent heatstroke

The summer heat waves have just ended with record temperatures. On those particular days it is important to hydrate to avoid so-called heat stroke. One of the sectors most affected by high temperatures is the countryside. For this reason, the University of Lleida has given temporary workers a wristband that measures their hydration level at all times.

To the usual attire of seasonal workers exposed to extreme temperatures, this device on their arm has now been added to measure hydration levels in real time, vital information to prevent heat stroke.

The wrist hydration sensor developed by the company hDrop Technologies Inc measures the workers' sweat, how many liters of water they have lost and how much sodium and chlorine they have lost, as Tania Cameli, a researcher at the University of Lleida, explains.

Correct hydration

Although seasonal workers explain that they always have water during their working days, it is important to know if the intake is adequate. "We don't really know if we drink what we should and we don't all have the same feeling of thirst," says Judith Roca, another researcher at the University of Lleida.

And the wristband data shows differences between some workers and others, even if they work at the same temperature. The figures are analyzed and at the end of the working day, the health status of each employee is checked.

If a deficit is noted, the researchers provide hydration guidelines. Although the researchers have started to test the bracelet in the field, it will also be tested on the elderly and children, with the aim of preventing heatstroke.

hDrop Technologies Inc

hDrop Technologies is a team of doctors, engineers, developers, data scientists and innovation enthusiasts who develop cutting-edge wearable technologies. Our team aims to change the way people feel about wearables by providing actionable data instead of step counts. What, when and how to improve health care in our daily lives. The future is tomorrow, the future is with hDrop.

Customize your hydration and recovery preparation

  • Fluid loss: This refers to the amount of fluid your body loses when you exercise. It is used to calculate hydration needs.
  • Sweat rate: This is the amount of sweat produced in one hour. It is useful for calculating fluid losses.
  • Sodium loss: This is the amount of salt lost in sweat. It is used to calculate electrolyte needs.

During exercise, a new function that allows you to know your hydration status easily and intuitively. It is a tool that will help you understand your situation, form your hydration strategy and be more prepared. It does not replace, in any way, the advice of a professional.

  • Concentrated area: This area indicates that your sweat has less water and more salt. It may mean that you are not drinking enough water.
  • Target zone: This is the zone where the concentration of salts and the volume of your sweat are balanced, indicating that your sweat level is within the normal range.
  • Diluted area: This area indicates that your sweat contains more water than usual. It suggests that you are drinking too much water, which dilutes your body's salts and may require more electrolytes.

When the body loses excess water and fluids that inhibit its normal functioning, we call it dehydration. On the other hand, add water without filling the electrolytesif we drink too much, we can dilute the amount of sodium in our blood. This condition is known as hyponatremia.
