The rise that Artificial Intelligence has experienced in the last two years has generated controversies. On the one hand, there is the rhetoric that announces AI as a technology that is a complement, assistant or tool for people, while many others point out (and have been able to verify) that this technology is a substitute for the work of many people and although this may be seen as a positive thing, there is the question of what will these people do when they have been replaced?
This fear is one of the most common and widespread, and with good reason, since if a machine is capable of replicating what a person does and has the advantages for the employer that it does not require a salary, it does not get sick, it has no rights. No opinions, no one is going to want human workers.
The truth is that until now, all companies and even governments have assured that these are distant and future problems, and that AI is very far from posing a threat to our jobs. However, they were wrong and due to the rapid development of AI and its successful application in different tasks, machines have already begun to replace people.
The latest example of this has occurred in the state of Texas (USA), where the local media The Texas Tribune has echoed the recent controversy that has occurred and that has left more than 4,000 examiners out of work overnight. tomorrow.
Apparently those affected are 4,000 STAAR examiners, a state exam that students under 18 years of age must take to measure their knowledge in subjects such as writing, reading, science and social studies.
Each year the state of Texas hires 6,000 teachers for several weeks to supervise and correct these exams. Well, apparently, this year the state has only hired 2,000 examiners and the rest of the vacancies will be filled by an AI.
José Ríos, director of student evaluation at the Texas Education Agency, assures that in this way the state saves "between 15 and 20 million dollars a year." Although many question the measure as it leaves more than 4,000 people unemployed, since this is precisely the opposite of generating wealth in the state.
At the same time, many have raised their voices criticizing this decision because the exam is not a test type, but rather it is an exam with free answers, which the AI will have to analyze and interpret the answers to validate them and no one knows. with what parameters or criteria it will do it.
The Texas Education Agency has assured that this AI has been trained with more than 3,000 responses that passed two rounds of human scoring, yet students, parents and teachers have been against this change that has been applied without consulting them and the which will depend on whether students pass the course or not.
