Q, asexual assistant

In the technology of ending gender biases. This has been the goal of the VIRTUE and Copenhagen Pride North team in Q's creation: he is the first assistant with a neutral voice, that is, his voice has nothing to do with the woman's voice, or the man's. This product was presented at the prestigious South by Sothwest Fair (SXXW), a technology-driven trade fair in Austin, Texas (USA).

As technology companies have seen, users prefer a male or female voice depending on the scenario; but what about those who don't want to hear voices in traditional genres? Until now, male voice was used in authoritative roles, such as in banking or insurance applications; female voice, on the other hand, was used more in service-oriented roles, such as Amazon's Alexa, Apple's Siri, or Microsoft's Cortana. Because Q will bring an end to these stereotypes.

Julie Carpenter is a researcher in human behavior and interaction with robots. This suggests that there is no reason not to make a third choice. "Introducing a gender perspective in technology can help people adapt to their techniques and make them more comfortable," he says. Carpenter talks about these people, whose physical characteristics belong to the male or female, but not why their identities must be the same (non-binary or third-gender).

Q's co-founder Emil Asmussen says people are surprised that such a product didn't exist. "No binaries claim to open the phone and have a third option to make them feel included."

The development of a neutral voice has been made possible by the research of Anna Jørgensen, a linguist at the University of Copenhagen who has used her academic research to define the parameters of a non-binary gender voice. Researchers started work on the project last summer. Five non-male and female voice parameters were recorded. They used special modulation software and changed their voice to neutral level through research. Already modulated voices have been proven in research in Europe with 4,600 people, each of whom was asked to rate 1 (male) to 5 (female). After the polls, they managed to modulate a voice, until they got neutral.

After developing a non-binary gender voice, the next step is to build an artificial intelligence structure. The creators, however, are more wholesalers and expect Q to not only be a voice assistant for smartphones or tablets, but also to hear that voice at subway stations, cinemas or theaters. “Q was created for use by four technology firms, namely Microsoft, Apple, Amazon and Google. Nothing has happened yet, but we are in talks with some companies, ”said co-founder Ryan Sherman. "And we are already in contact with all three of them," added Emil Asmussen, a member of the creative team.

Third genus
Many countries have begun to recognize their third gender identity card. In 2013, Germany failed to specify sex in its birth certificate, and last year was pioneered in Europe by the German government's approval of a third gender.

Denmark, Malta, Denmark, Ireland, Greece, Portugal, Norway and the Netherlands are part of the group that supports gender self-determination, meaning that people do not have to justify their legal identity change with a clinical diagnosis. In Spain, the situation has become obsolete, because a medical diagnosis is necessary, before a hormonal treatment is needed.
