It has been 20 years since the creation of Mundukide, as well as being a co-worker in the free time with the initiative of several people who have been volunteering at the NGO. . Beyond small projects, they would have a greater impact because they felt the need to start projects. And so they approached Mondragon, made a proposal and created an organization born among Mundukide, NGOs and cooperatives. This was explained at the press conference by Raul García Díaz, the current President of Mundukide.
Over the years, Mundukide has worked in 10 countries, involving 250 people, including staff and volunteers, with more than 300 southern associations. The work of 2018 has had an impact on the lives of 75,000 people.
However, there is much to be done. On the one hand, the concentration of wealth that is happening today in the hands of a few, increases the differences between people, on the other, has revealed climate change as threats to the planet and, finally, the migration crisis. Faced with this situation, Leire Mugerza Garat, Vice President of Mundukide, highlighted the main challenges for the coming years.
Mundukide will expand its activities in Brazil and Mozambique over the next three years, taking into account the situation in these two countries. In addition, they will launch new programs in Ethiopia and Malawi in Africa, while in America, Colombia has begun work and will also move to Ecuador.
In addition to their work in the southern countries, they also intend to promote change in our society by working with the Co-operatives and the Mondragon University of Education and the Arizmendi Ikastola. At the same time, Mundukide is committed to empowering women. Strengthening gender equity in its organization, southern programs, and working institutions.
Finally, the director, Josu Urrutia Beristain, thanked all those who were Mundukide's co-workers: co-operatives, volunteers, co-operatives, staff, funders and public organizations. With all these people and organizations, as well as 20 years in the South, they will hold a celebration on November 7th at the Cultural Center of Mondragón.
Increasing activity
As agreed in the 2018-21 Strategic Plan, Mundukide's work is continually multiplying throughout the world. For example, in Mozambique, in 2018, the sixth program was opened in the Mitande district of Niassa province, and more than 50,000 people are beneficiaries of the experience. In Brazil, they are working in six other state institutions and the seventh is under way, with a total of 25 cooperatives. Even so, they greeted the year with the launch of the new Colombian program.
In addition to Mundukide programs and foundation volunteers, they have been present in Mexican cooperatives and have also worked in Kenya, contributing to the Africa Basque Challenge project promoted by Mondragon University. They will start working in Ecuador for the first six months of 2019. And also on the African continent, Malawi and Ethiopia.
After a twenty-year career, one of the main reasons for the emergence of healthy and experienced Mundukide development cooperation, with the involvement of people, has been the inter-cooperative work between companies, cooperatives and various organizations.
Even then, all the people of the world will continue to own life and work.
