MG Cyberster Concept, as an electric car

The Chinese company SAIC, which currently owns MG, has just posted images of the MG Cyberster Concept on its social networks: it is a two-seater sports car that has every chance of being converted into the next electric vehicle.

Gone are the days when Morris Garage (MG) spent days selling relatively cheap two-seater cars. Thanks to them, this British manufacturer gained a great deal of popularity and sympathy among many car enthusiasts. After many economic and commercial upheavals and many property changes, the old MG is now owned by SAIC Motor. And it seems that this Chinese company is ready to revive the MG two-seater car as an electric model.

SAIC Design has published drafts of the MG Cyberster Concept on its social media: it would be a two-seater roadster, but we still know a few details. However, we do know that this concept has been jointly designed and developed by different design teams in the UK and Shanghai (China) and is said to be “very exciting”.

The images show us a roadster with an elongated hood, with a sharp nose that is very close to the ground, with circular lights, thin LED strips and a light MG logo. The back takes on a different look, with straight, rectangular lines, and LED lights that highlight the entire back environment.

In the side view we see a car with relatively moderate dimensions, large diameter wheels, a fairly curved wind (and slightly smaller than normal) and two humps behind the rear seats. The images that come with the teaser released by the company, along with the re-creation of some lightning, say it will be an electric car.
Although no further details of this new model are currently known at the official level, the time has come to remember some of the rumors that arose two years ago. At the time, it was stated that a new MG two-seater car was being developed to compete with the Mazda MX-5 (the best-selling roadster in history).

These rumors pointed to a model built on a completely new platform; it would have an electric motor and wheel traction. Unless we know more about this MG Cyberster Concept, it seems that the return of MG in sports is closer.

Innovative

The design breaks with what has been seen so far in MG, making it a much more sophisticated and aggressive bet than the brand’s conventional models. However, remember that the MG Cyberster Concept is the prototype after all. The new MG Cyberster is designed at the MG Design Center in London. A conscious opportunity to deliver a more European design and also be closer to the company’s original roots.

If the design is a major breakthrough, the interior technology should not be left behind. MG will develop a new electrical architecture for Cyberster, which will allow it to have a range of 800 kilometers according to the brand, although no further details have been announced about it. It will be interesting to check the technology used to achieve this autonomy, as it is unlikely to be close to the batteries of the Tesla Model S 2021 or Mercedes EQS (both with a range of close to 800 km and batteries of 100 kWh or more).

Dynamic performance is also expected to be high, at 0-100 km / h in less than three seconds, according to MG. The technological expansion of Cyberster will not lack the 5G connectivity introduced in the vehicle.
