Mikel Mendibe is a natural of Iurretako (Vizcaya), 47 years old, and Coprecin works from February 2015. He joined the Copreci company in charge of the management of the Chinese factory after a training period in Aretxabaleta
What was your journey to reach Copreci?
I studied Organizational Engineering at Mondragon University and, after a number of work experience, I started contacting Mondragon Corporation in 2000, and then went to China to start a production management company; There, I was 6 years old. I spent a year on leave and I joined Copreci in 2015, and that year I came to Copreci in China.
What is Copreci's position in China at this time, customer, market ...?
Copreci China is currently divided into 4 businesses: cleaning, BBQ, tubular business and Gas Asian cuisine. Gas Gas and Gas in Asia Gas Most important customers in Asia are BSH and Sakura. On the other hand, in tubers and BBQ businesses, customers are other types. The final customer is an American, but the consignors are Chinese companies. Copreci negotiates the agreement with the final customer and sends the pieces to Chinese assemblers who send their pieces to BBK in the designated destination. Here our main clients are WEBER and CHAR BROIL.
In general, since 2017, Copreci was a good year in China, where we achieved our record of sales by placing it in a line of about 20M. In 2018, the situation was more complex. The economic situation in the world, the economic pulse that China and the US are making, has had a major impact on BBQ's business market. Customs duties applied to the US government for China products (up to 25%) have had a direct impact on the sales of barbecues. Our latest customers are taking measures to alleviate the impact of the rates on their products, which we also need to adapt to these changes.
And what are the future challenges?
In keeping with the foregoing, the future challenges are basically adapting to the new barbecued market situation, which, as it is changing, requires us to be flexible. Additionally, we want to grow and become a reference in Cocción Gas asia business, as we are in European and American markets. We also have the challenge of innovation and automation of processes, since the cost of labor is becoming increasingly profitable for our products.
In the personal field, Chinese culture, lifestyle, customs, ... have you gone?
It's been 10 years since I came to China, so it's pretty normal for me. I live with my wife 8 years ago we met each other in Shanghai. In my opinion, the most violent change was from living in a farmhouse surrounded by giant skyscrapers. But when you get used to it you also see the advantages.
The weekends go through work and trips. There is a growing traffic and it takes more time to reach the factory. On weekends, I try to spend time with my wife and take advantage of dinner at our nearby places. Zhuhain's food, I think China is the best.
How often do you come home? Do you keep in touch with your people?
Anyway, I returned to the Basque Country. I have two lucky months to go home, which has allowed me to be here for 10 years. Returning home and talking with a gang and family is the greatest joy.
What are your future plans?
I still have a few years in China. The return to the Basque Country is always in my mind, but such decisions must be taken over time and agreed with the company. At the moment, there are major challenges in China. So I'll continue here.
