Developed by Planetfall Triumph Studios and published by Paradox Interactive, Age of Wonders: Planetfall is our video game. The 4X turn-based strategy game is the fifth installment of the Age of Wonders series and has a science fiction setting. It's available for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One since August.
An unknown cataclysm led to Star Union, the government of the Galatians. Factions fight for supremacy and want to build a new future for humanity; in the process, they unravel the cosmic mystery behind the collapse of the Union.
The game has six different factions at launch, each with different units and game modes. For example, Amazon is a human woman who uses dinosaurs as a medium and weapon; on the other, Kir'ko is a group of similar insect species, which use the body as a crime. The player takes control of a faction commander - a customizable leader who can explore the planet, engage in diplomacy, covert operations and spy activities, and declare war.
The world map created by the procedure is divided into different sectors. Each sector has two distinct biomes, where production, food, research and energy can be harnessed. These expectations may be heightened by the introduction of landmarks in biomes. As players expand, they will control more cities and each of them can be managed individually. Players can deplete resources on the map to conduct research and invade enemy camps to incorporate technology.
On the map, players will encounter neutral fractions so they can ally with the fraction of players and provide additional combat support. The game features "Doomsday tech", a skill tree that eventually unlocks weapons of mass destruction. Players can also build navy fleets and aircraft to increase their fractional military power.
The turn-based ground battle uses a bottom-up approach. The player controls different military units and troops by guiding their location in the battlefield and taking cover, instructing them to open fire and use tactics. In turn, each unit can perform three actions. Players can "stop" the enemy, which can disrupt special attacks and lose an action point. A new mechanic is introduced and the shots shot there will do half damage. Military units can be upgraded with different mods and equipment to increase combat efficiency.
Development
The game was developed by Triumph Studios and released by Paradox Interactive, which acquired the studio in 2017. This is a game development that began in mid-2015, leaving the fantasy of the Age of Wonders series to a sci-fi setting. In fact, the team wanted to experiment with new topics and ideas. The expanded diplomacy was inspired by the large strategy games at Paradox Development Studios. The war zones were more complex because they were more vertical and destructive compared to the Wonders III era.
The team valued the feedback of Age of Wonders III and made several improvements, including increasing the complexity of the economic system by allowing more players to join the game.
The team also tried to make each faction more unique by giving it different gameplay advantages and features.
