The 12th edition of the MONDRAGON Forum

This is an annual meeting to reflect on strategic issues in a shared manner, with the participation of representatives of the governing bodies and directors of MONDRAGON cooperatives. This year, international professionals, young cooperative members and a broad representation of businesses that collaborate with MONDRAGON also attended.

A day to reflect together with the cooperatives on the strategic axes of their roadmap for the next four years. The day was opened by the president of the Congress, Leire Mugerza, and the president of the General Council of the Corporation, Pello Rodríguez, closed the day with a presentation in which he encouraged cooperatives to “continue working on the competitiveness of businesses in order to continue making our contribution to society as companies committed to our territory.”

In the closing speech, Pello Rodríguez explained the 15 projects that have been defined for 2025, and emphasised the process of preparing this management plan, in which the General Council and the Permanent Commission of MONDRAGON have actively participated.

The event was closed by the Lehendakari Imanol Pradales, who attended this event for the first time and thanked the invitation. At the beginning of his speech he valued the MONDRAGON Forum because “holding this type of meeting serves to get away from the dynamics of day-to-day life and have qualified time to reflect together”.

In addition, he added that “Europe is in the midst of transformation and its axes pivot on innovation, the green economy and decarbonisation, respecting the transitions. We have the future as a country at stake: both MONDRAGON and our business fabric must participate in these debates and common axes, and play our cards”.

Strategic axes

The opening talk “Current socioeconomic challenges” was given by Arancha González Laya, dean of the Paris School of International Affairs, better known as Science-Po, and former Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of the Government of Spain. González Laya reviewed the main geopolitical events of today and stressed the importance of collaboration to face the current challenges of the world. “If we want to maintain the level of development we have achieved, everything depends on generating alliances, local, state, European or global, to integrate and strengthen our capabilities” she said.

Throughout the day, several internal experiences related to MONDRAGON's future strategic axes were presented: Commitment and cooperative identity, Business with a future, Openness and social impact and Intercooperation. The cases were presented by Rosa Carabel, CEO of Grupo Eroski; Mikel Trojaola, CEO of Fagor Electrónica; and Xabier Egibar and Nuria Agirre, CEO and director of people at LABORAL Kutxa.

The examples of intercooperation of the cooperatives Batz, MLAKoop and MONDRAGON Hospitality were also projected, as well as a reflection on the contributions of the people and financial committees.
The forum is a space in which other experiences also have a place, such as those, in this case, related by Miguel Angel Carrera, from AVS, and Alejandro Oñoro, from Ilunion, both related to the areas of New Business and Opening and Social Impact.

In the closing presentation, Pello Rodríguez explained the 15 projects that have been defined for 2025, and emphasized the process of preparing said management plan, in which the General Council and the Permanent Commission of MONDRAGON have actively participated and which is now being shared with the divisions.

In this review of actions to be carried out within the framework of the new Socio-Business Policy 2025/2028, he referred to some of those 15 projects that are already “under development” and that have to do, for example, with the generation of New Businesses in growth sectors in which MONDRAGON currently has no presence, “for which it will be necessary to open up to other corporations,” he said. He also pointed out the need to work much more closely with universities, “both in the areas of digital technologies and in training in cooperative values.” He also placed emphasis on promoting inter-cooperation dynamics “that have a greater impact on our businesses,” and, finally, he concluded by pointing out that MONDRAGON’s contribution to society must be projected more strongly, “so that the Corporation is referred to as a key agent in the development of our territory.”

“We are starting a new strategic period with new energies renewed, with new ideas, confident in our capabilities, from a more open MONDRAGON, and willing to take new steps to leave a better legacy to the next generations”.
