The KUBIT project, supported by the Basque Network of Science, Technology and Innovation, is investigating how to strengthen Artificial Intelligence in the Basque industrial sector and contribute to European technological sovereignty.
Quantum computing is constantly evolving and is emerging as a key technology to address complex problems that exceed the capabilities of classical computing, especially in an increasingly interconnected world. With its potential to lead the development of Artificial Intelligence, through initiatives such as the KUBIT project, the Basque Network of Science, Technology and Innovation seeks to strengthen the competitiveness of the Basque ecosystem.
The KUBIT project –Kuantikaren Berrikuntzarako Ikasketa Teknologikoa (Technological Learning for Quantum Innovation)– investigates methods, algorithms and approaches to quantum computing and simulation to complement Artificial Intelligence in the Basque industrial sector and evaluate its impact and maturity. Ibermática Fundazioa, Ikerlan, Lortek, Tekniker, Mondragon Unibertsitatea, UPV/EHU and Vicomtech are collaborating on the initiative, with the support of the SPRI Group through the Elkartek programme.
The initiative arises from the ongoing research of its partners and from a series of identified computational problems, which are linked to common needs of the Basque industry. KUBIT seeks to develop a portfolio of industrial property assets in the field of quantum computing, focused on solving typical problems in the industrial environment and creating techniques to address complex computational challenges using the most advanced quantum hardware available.
It also helps the European strategy to achieve sovereignty in critical technologies, and to ensure that Europe has essential capabilities throughout the Artificial Intelligence value chain.
To activate the initiative, the consortium has also had the support of BasQ, the Provincial Council of Bizkaia and its Bizkaia Quantum Industrial Hub, the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa, the Provincial Council of Álava, BAIC-Basque Artificial Intelligence Center, the GAIA Cluster, IBM, CAF (Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles), ERICTEL, Euskaltel, Petronor and Telefónica.
