We all already knew that TCL was working on packaging screens. They gave us a little progress last year and at this CES 2021 the team has shown their two proposals. The first is the “Printed OLED Scrolling Display,” a 17-inch wrapping screen; the second is a 6.7 / 7.8-inch AMOLED panel, mostly designed for phones. The two screens have in common that they are able to occupy more or less space, depending on the needs of the user. At the moment TCL doesn’t see its creation on any commercial device, but it wouldn’t be surprising. Manufacturers like LG already have their proposals on the market.
As mentioned, TCL has introduced two screens. The first is a 17-inch printed OLED rotating screen. TCL says it is 0.18mm thick and can be adapted to any format. For example, we can think of a small portable TV wrapped in the form of a poster or a printed image. The manufacturer assures that the printing technology reproduces 100% of the colors and “significantly improves the quality of the screen”. He also says that the cost of production is 20% lower than traditional display technologies, and that it is "more applicable to large screens and mass production."
The second model shown by TCL is the 6.7-inch AMOLED display, which is designed for phones. It can be extended to the sides to switch from a 6.7-inch screen to a 7.8-inch panel with a “one-touch”. That, in principle, could be used to turn a large smartphone into a small tablet, but without increasing the thickness of the device too much. Folding mobiles have this “drawback” that they are quite thick when folded. TCL, however, says a mobile with a roll-up display can be up to ten millimeters thick. The radius of curvature of this screen can be three millimeters, which is very small. The company has been very confident in its technology: "The useful life of the sliding mechanism is up to 100,000 times." For example, it would be enough to unplug your phone 100 times a day for less than three years. At the moment there is no news about the implementation on a consumer device; so be careful.
