Metro Bilbao will have 37 new trains starting in 2028

The first modernized trains that will begin running in three years will be digital and will have five carriages, increasing capacity by 12%.  The plan includes modernizing the command post and the communications system to make frequencies more flexible.

The Basque Government and the Bizkaia Provincial Council will invest around 740 million euros in the modernization of Metro Bilbao. About to turn 30 years old and also close to reaching 100 million passengers, the objective is to strengthen Bizkaia's public transport system for the future.

In this way, this week the procedures will begin so that in three years the first modernized trains can begin to circulate. They will be digital and will all have five carriages, so capacity will be increased by 12%.

Specifically, 37 train units will be replaced, those that have reached the end of their useful life. The cost of each five-car train unit will be around €16.3 million and they will be more energy efficient, significantly reducing electricity consumption by 35%, which is estimated to save up to €1.5 million annually. Likewise, the plan includes the modernization of the command post and the communications system to "make frequencies more flexible."
