The Basque startup KUVU has launched its shared accommodation platform, which promotes intergenerational coexistence, connecting people over 55 who are willing to rent a spare room in their homes with people from other generations who are looking for decent and affordable rent. The goal of this social enterprise, which is already in high demand, is to help improve the quality of life of the elderly, increase their income and, above all, help reduce unwanted loneliness.
To date, this leasing and home sharing program is already operating in 55 cities in Madrid, the Basque Country and Barcelona, and will soon be launched in the European market; and it has a growing community with more than 270 owners and more than 2,000 tenants looking for housing.
When the team conducted market research, they found that two million elderly people live alone, and 65% of them feel isolated. This evidence is added to the fact that 4 out of 10 retirees have difficulty reaching the end of their lives. On the other hand, regarding the rental of decent housing: the emancipation age of young people is extremely high, and a young person would spend, on average, 81.9% of their salary on rent, compared to the recommended maximum of 35%.
To address these serious social symptoms, KUVU introduces and scales up intergenerational housing sharing programs, focused on three clear objectives: economic stability, prevention of social isolation and improving the supply of affordable housing. By publishing ads and registering and monitoring users, the platform connects older people who want to rent rooms, generate extra income and avoid loneliness with young people looking for decent housing.
From there, the team helps the host choose their guest through a screening process that develops tests and personalized interviews that analyze the compatibility between the two people.
The program offers a service for monitoring conversations, with individual conversations, payment management and mediation in the event of incidents and conflicts. In addition, to regulate the agreement, the entity has created a specific contract, unique in Spain, that regulates cohabitation within the rental with some basic rules regarding household chores.
