The first wireless OLED TV (I)

Wireless TVs are no longer the stuff of science fiction: LG has unveiled a 97-inch wireless OLED TV at CES 2023, and it was one of the most eye-catching items at the company's stand. But in a quiet corner of the Las Vegas Convention Center's Great Hall, there's something more intriguing: a 55-inch 4K OLED TV that's completely wireless.

Completely wireless, meaning no cables whatsoever, not even for power (as it features LG's 97-inch wireless OLED). Displace TV has created a screen that runs on four lithium-ion batteries, and you can watch TV for six hours a day for a month without recharging. The TV, wireless base station, battery and charger cost $3,000, and four TVs can be purchased for $9,000.

Why would you want four Displace wireless TVs? Because they can be combined to create a 110-inch 8K TV. The TVs have top-mounted cameras that track hand movements, and with a pinch-and-expand gesture, an image currently displayed on one screen can be expanded to fill all four. (The Displace TV wireless base station, which transmits to screens via Wi-Fi 6E, has multiple video inputs for simultaneous viewing of multiple sources, and also has a smartTV interface.)

That pinch and expand feature is awesome, but it's even better to see how the TV mounts to the wall.

Using a low battery, Displace TV's patented active loop vacuum technology is used to fix the TV to a surface without the need for tools: grab the latches on the sides of the panel, pull and turn it off, release the vacuum seal. In fact, you can move the light TV (approx. 7.25 kg) to another room, mount it safely on another wall and enjoy.

After watching Displace TV in action, the current version has some drawbacks. When several TVs are joined together, a gap is visible between the panels. This is a far cry from the fluid visuals achieved with MicroLED displays larger than 100 inches, which are also joined by multiple panels. Televisions have a highly reflective screen surface, which was easily seen at a trade show with lots of bright lights.

But considering the state-of-the-art technology and the relatively low price paid for a 110-inch 8K OLED TV (LG's 97-inch 4K OLED is $25,000, and comes with cables), Displace TV's offering is very interesting.
