It took four years of development, but they surprised everyone. Withings has introduced the first urine analyzer connected to mobile phones. We are talking about the new U-Scan, a device that can be placed in the toilet and works completely wirelessly.
Home automation has reached the bathroom and Withings, one of the brands with the longest history in the clothing sector, brings us a product that is very different from anything we've seen so far. A product with a commercial side, which will be available in Europe in mid-2023.
The purpose of this U-Scan is to analyze the urine of users, helping to detect possible infections or health problems. The device has a circular shape and a diameter of about 9 centimeters. It is placed inside the bathroom, and the company explains that it easily adapts to different sinks.
The U-Scan is linked to the Withings app and is able to separate urine from different family members, as well as separate urine from other types of liquids.
We are dealing with a health device and the data it collects is considered important. Urine contains many health biomarkers (more than 3,000) that can give us many clues about our condition. Withings wants to make urine tracking as common as our pulse.
The device collects samples automatically. It is activated when the thermal sensors detect urine. Inside the U-Scan is a cartridge containing several tests for chemical analysis. There is also an optical module for urine analysis. These cartridges can be washed with water and last for approximately three months. Just like the filters of a vacuum cleaner, they need to be renewed.
Data obtained includes pH, vitamin C and nutrition, hydration and ketone levels. The 'U-Scan Cycle Sync' cartridge also enables menstrual cycle analysis based on predictions and analysis of hormonal levels and dietary biomarkers.
Withings U-Scan will be available in Europe from the second quarter of 2023, at an official price of 499.95 euros. The starter kit includes a reader and a cartridge that provides a three-month trial. Additional cartridges can be purchased by subscription or directly from Withings.
Future medical cartridges, more advanced than the standard ones, are still awaiting regulatory approval in Europe. Withings' idea is to sell the device in the United States as well, but the procedures with the FDA are still at an early stage.
