A few weeks ago, Samsung unveiled a new unpacked where, in addition to introducing new Galaxy Z Flip3 and Fold3 folders, it unveiled the next generation of its smartwatch. The Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic became the first smartwatches to integrate Wear OS 3 (Google’s new laptop operating system).

Now, the South Korean company has launched a new app on Google Play that allows us to use these watches as a walkie-talkie. This free app, called the Walkie Talkie and invented by XDA, allows two or more users to have instant conversations without access to mobile data.

Samsung Walkie Talkie version 1.0 is available for free download on Google Play and has 23 MB. Similar to the Apple Watch’s Walkie Talkie feature, this new Samsung app allows both users to create channels and maintain two-way voice communication via clocks without the need for a phone.

In other words, the new smartwatch converts short voice messages into real-time walkie-talkies. Of course, it can only be used by owners of a Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 (standard or classic) to talk to each other, it is not compatible with smart watches from other brands or previous models of the company. And a Samsung account is required to use it.

Although it can operate independently after setup, Samsung recommends using the Walkie Talkie app for the first time while the watch is connected to your phone. Simply connect the watch to a tight touch on the Galaxy Watch 4 and press the microphone button to transmit the voice.

Samsung doesn’t specify the operating area of ​​the app, so we don’t know how far it can be used. The optional permissions required by the application include: Microphone (to transmit voice), Contacts (to identify friends who can use the Walkie-Talkie), Call (to receive a call to restrict the Walkie-Talkie function), and Location (to create a channel for Bluetooth friends).
