Keys to the European Digital Decade

EU member states have signed three declarations aimed at promoting the regulation and consolidation of efforts and resources in the areas of connectivity, clean digital technologies and startups. This event aims to promote the digitalisation and ecological transformation of Europe, in line with the objectives of the Digital Decade.

As part of the Digital Day 2021 celebrations organized by the European Commission, which brought together MEPs, ministers from Member States, industry management and other stakeholders, European countries are committed to promoting international connectivity. In addition, there are other objectives aimed at disseminating clean digital technologies and improving the regulatory environment for start-ups.
With regard to the latest commitment, 24 EU countries and Iceland have signed a ‘EU Startup Nations Standard’ statement to promote new and large-scale enterprises to take advantage of good practices aimed at transitioning to a sustainable, digital and resilient economy.

European data crossings

27 countries - 25 member states, Iceland and Norway - have signed the declaration ‘European data gateways as a key element of the EU digital decade’, pledging to strengthen connectivity between Europe and its neighbors and its African, Asian and Latin American partners.
In this regard, attention will be focused on terrestrial and submarine cables, satellites and network links to increase and ensure data exchange.

Ecological and digital transformation

With regard to the declaration ‘Ecological and digital transformation of the EU’ to accelerate the use of green digital technologies for the benefit of the environment, 24 EU countries, Iceland and Norway, have signed.


Thus, they will work together to accelerate the deployment and promotion of advanced digital technologies such as 5G and 6G networks, fiber optics, high-performance computing and IoT as key solutions to achieve climate neutrality and promote ecological and digital transformations in priority sectors. such as transportation or energy. Other areas of action include cloud, Artificial Intelligence and blockchain technologies, as well as sustainable IT equipment, green public procurement and support for green technology startups and SMEs.

Along the same lines, 26 executives from companies in the ICT sector have joined the European Green Digital Coalition and pledged on behalf of their companies to significantly reduce their carbon footprint by 2030 and a neutral climate by 2040.

Digital Day 2021

Digital Day 2021 was celebrated on 19 March as a virtual event, organized by the European Commission in collaboration with the Portuguese Presidency. As mentioned, Digital Day 2021 brought together member states of the European Union to discuss and commit to the current and future challenges of digital technologies. The full-day event was attended by EU Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton and the Portuguese President of the Council of the European Union, as well as ministers from member states, members of the European Parliament, industry executives and other senior stakeholders.
