Millions of gamers, students, teachers, and staff use Discord every day. Either to play, to talk quietly or to teach. Discord is used non-stop because of its immense potential and smooth operation. Now it's coming to PS5 after a long wait.

We have waited much longer than we should have. But happiness is good and it was worth it. Beta 7.0 update testers will be able to join Discord voice calls from a PS5 console in the United States, Canada, Japan, and the United Kingdom. We've been left out again, yes.

The integration will allow PS5 owners to join Discord calls by linking their accounts and using the Discord mobile app to transfer calls to PS5. It may seem a bit confusing or convoluted, but it is the first approximation between the two services.

Discord's voice integration on the PS5 is similar to what Microsoft originally released for the Xbox One and Series consoles. In the middle of 2023 it doesn't make sense for consoles not to accept that Discord is the best program for chatting with friends while gaming.

Sony says "use the Discord app on your mobile device or computer to start a Discord voice chat on your PS5 console," which means you won't be able to access the PS5's Discord servers directly without using a device or your computer to transfer the call.

The first step for a console that should be the first of many

Let's hope Sony improves soon, as Microsoft improved Discord integration for Xbox in November, allowing Xbox owners to voice channels directly from a console without having to use their phone or PC.

In addition to Discord support, the PS5 will also support variable refresh rate for 1,440px (2.5K) resolution. This means HDMI 2.1 compatible displays will be able to enable 1,440px VRR for smoother visual performance in games.

Sony has made some improvements to the social aspects of screen sharing and party chat on the PS5 dashboard, as well as adding a new "friends playing" tab so you can see which friends are currently playing.

The Japanese company is making it easy to import PS4 save data into a PS5, which means new games can load old PS4 save data. There's also a new option to move PS5 data and games from one console to another using a local WiFi or LAN connection. Unfortunately, we'll have to wait months for it to arrive on our PS5.
