F2P Campus (Free To Play) is an accelerator that maximizes success opportunities for teams to develop video games. In the summer of this year, a new edition of the Campus was held in Vitoria-Gasteiz, where some experts gave interesting talks.
One of these experts was Gerard Fernández. Fernández is one of the most qualified voices in the video game industry in Spain. He founded Microjocs and then worked at Digital Chocolate. In 2013, however, he founded Omidron, a company that develops free-to-play video games. Throughout his career, he has experienced successes and failures. Therefore, he took part in the event to talk about the mistakes that every startup in the sector makes.
The best professionals
Human capital is one of the cornerstones of any company in the industry. At different times, Gerard has created different companies and grown close to friends, but time has shown that finding the right talent is crucial. It's not just good to have great people, or people with great skills, who don't know how to fit in a team. The selection criteria and techniques must be in place to be the best human team possible and to carry out the project you are most confident of, with the ability to manage people and groups.
Focus on product, not technology
Those who work in the industry are dedicated to making games, not machines. Technology is important, but it is important to choose the best technology for each project and not to waste months developing a technology and then playing video games. Leading video game development technologies have a large team to create and improve tools that developers can use, and they will always do better.
Balance between "renewing" and "improving"
Gerard Fernandez made it clear that innovation should not be abandoned, but 90% of successful video games are copies of developments, adaptations or other existing games. This is why it is sometimes more effective to focus on improving existing models.
Investors and advisors, different
Investors and advisors are not the same thing. Investors are important, but they are just investors, and they are trying to find the highest possible return. In addition to good investors, there must also be good advisors who guide, help and direct.
It's not a hobby, it's a business
If you are an avid fan of video games and have fun doing what you do, you are in luck. But hey, you're starting a business now. You need to spend time and resources developing your business, making contacts or attending events. Have fun too, but keep in mind that starting a business is a must and a profitable business.
Know your limitations and ask for help
Although you're good at it, you don't know everything. You need to be aware of what you are good for and what is not. Ask for help in those areas that you do not master; seek advice from consultants and investors, delegate and gather the best talent to work in areas you are not an expert on.
Quickly test
It is the foundation of any business with a digital footprint. Once you have a playable game, try it out. Stop adding features and enhancements and learn what users are saying. There are many tools to test prototypes and if you do it in different countries, you will also get more complete feedback.
