The youth unemployment rate in the Basque Country stands at 17.8%, according to the latest Labor Force Survey (LFS). However, many companies in the territory say that they have difficulty finding certain job profiles. The most requested, according to Confebask, are those in the STEM branch (Sciencie, Technology, Engineering and Maths in English; Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). These are all areas with a high employability rate, but perhaps it is math students who have the widest job opportunities before them.
In the 2015-2016 academic year, 95% of Mathematics graduates were studying at the Basque Public University, the only center in the Basque Country that offered these studies, three years later. These are data from a study on job placement conducted by the profession in the fourth quarter of 2019. In other words, the unemployment rate for this group was only 5%. In addition, 37% of these students needed less than a year to find their first job.
More than a quarter (27%) worked in companies in the research and development sector, and 34% found work in the education sector. On the other hand, 16% have worked in programming, consulting and other computer-related activities.
However, the weight of teaching has been significantly reduced in recent years in favor of other areas. "In fact, the presence of mathematicians in the sectors such as banking, consulting or computer science has grown significantly," says Mariasun García, Vice-Dean for Quality and Innovation at the Faculty of Science and Technology of the UPV / EHU and Professor of Mathematics. The number of teaching posts called by the Autonomous Communities is therefore vacant. "It simply came to our notice then
they need more mathematicians coming out of college, ”Garcia added.
There are more data that attest to the good occupational health of this discipline. A survey of Mathematics graduates at the University of the Basque Country from 08/08/2007 to 18/18/2007 revealed that 93% of those who answered the questionnaire were working at the end of 2018. They did so in consultancy in sectors such as pre-university education (16.84% in both cases), research centers (12.24%) or finance and banking (11.2%). More than half of these graduates (56.78%) had a fixed or indefinite contract at the time of the survey.
