Orbik is born, a company created by Ikerlan to offer cyber security services to the industrial sector. The new company is in the top 10 in the world of cyber security, and will offer the industry an external seal that ensures that its products are cyber secure, according to international standards that must be met in 2025.
In 2024, it is predicted that there will be 22.3 billion IoT devices worldwide. This is a perfect scenario for the exponential growth of cybercrime, but it is also a great opportunity to develop a cybersecurity business and create quality technology jobs to protect industry from cyberattacks. Electronic products are critical in the energy, transport or industrial sectors, where the safety and protection of people and property depends on the proper functioning of these devices, and malfunctioning can have very serious consequences. Therefore, it is very important to not only design these electronic products according to cyber security criteria, but also to update them regularly throughout their life cycle, so that they are robust and secure against cyber attacks.
To this end, a number of cyber security regulations are being developed internationally, which establish the criteria that electronic products must meet according to their application sector, and it is expected that manufacturers will have to meet them within two years.
In this context, two years ago, the Basque technological center Ikerlan identified a window of opportunity: to offer the industry an external seal that would ensure that its products are cyber-secure, according to the strictest international cyber-security standards.
This idea has led to the creation of Orbik, a new spin-off from the Basque technology center Ikerlan, a cybersecurity company based on the know-how and experience of the center, and the only one in the State, focused on serving industrial manufacturers of electronic equipment, offering certified cybersecurity products those who want to position themselves in the market as a company, before it is mandatory. The new company, which wants to expand its headquarters in the Basque Country and internationally, wants to become an evaluation laboratory according to international regulations and additional cyber security services (for example, active and continuous analysis of vulnerabilities), throughout the life cycle of industrial products operations. By 2027, it aims to have a workforce of twenty professionals and a turnover of two million euros.
