Huawei Pocket S, a cheap foldable phone (I)

Gradually, manufacturers have ended up entering the world of foldable phones. One of those that has recently made a strong bet in this segment is Huawei, with its ambitious Mate Xs 2 and P50 Pocket. Now, the Shenzhen-based company is taking an important step forward, and instead of presenting it as a flagship, it has announced a model that will be a somewhat cheaper alternative.

We are talking about the Huawei Pocket S terminal; it was partially revealed last October, but the official launch was scheduled for November 2nd in China. The day is here, and we've seen what could be a scaled-down version of the Pocket P50: it has a lot of similarities inside, but also one big difference: a "mid-to-high-end" processor. Let's take a closer look at its features.

The foldable Huawei Pocket S, powered by the Snapdragon 756G

Although this article is not a comparison, it is worth highlighting some of the differences between the Huawei P50 Pocket and the Huawei Pocket S.

While in the first we find the Snapdragon 888 4G processor, we find a chip that has been in many high-end mobiles since 2021. In the case of the second, we have a Snapdragon 778G 4G, a mid-high range proposal that we have seen in terminals such as OPPO Reno 7, Xiaomi 12 Lite and Huawei P50e.

We also find some differences in the level of memory and storage. Huawei P50 Pocket offers 8 GB RAM and 256 storage and 12 GB RAM and 512 storage versions. The Huawei Pocket S comes in a single 8GB RAM configuration with 128, 256 or 512GB storage options. Both devices support NMCards up to 256 GB.

As for the photographic capabilities of the terminal, the presented model has a dual camera configuration (unlike the triple camera of the P50 Pocket). We are talking about a 40 megapixel main sensor, supported by a 13 megapixel wide angle and LED flash. The front camera is 10.7 megapixels.

If we were to put one device next to the other, we would see that they are almost identical from the outside, both folded and open, in terms of appearance, size and screen technology. We are talking about a 6.9-inch FullHD + internal touchscreen with AMOLED technology and a 1.04-inch external touchscreen.

The Huawei Pocket S comes with a 4,000 mAh battery, which in practice can give us the autonomy to last a whole day of use. It also supports 40W Huawei Supercharge fast charging, which you can take advantage of thanks to the charger included in the device box. In terms of connectivity, we have 4G, WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.2 LE and USB-C 2.0 ports.
